Ren Fest Garb - Doublet

After seeing some awesome fancy trimmed doublets at the Ren Fest, I promised to make one for a friend of mine.
Some three years later, I finally got around to making it. I had some green cotton velveteen that I'd gotten for half price, and of the velvet colors I had available, that one worked best for my friend. I started with the sleeves, since they would be a challenge in themselves. 
The sleeve pattern was adapted from Simplicity 9531, as shown in the pink dress on the pattern envelope. 
It was an opportunity to play with sewing edging trim into seams, which I'd never done before, as well as sewing trim onto fabric before sewing the fabric together, also a new thing for me. The straight lines offered by the sleeves for these tasks seemed a good way to practice for the trickier bits to come on the doublet itself. Each sleeve was lined with black polyester lining fabric. I spent a good two weeks over Christmas and New Years working on this project, which included laying out LOTS of trim on the front of the doublet, and designing a way to lace up the sides to allow for grow and shrink room. The front and back pictures shown here are before I had attached the collar. 
I didn't quite finish in time for Twelfth Night, though. To this day this doublet, probably my most impressive sewing project to date, has never been worn. :( Hopefully I'll get him into it long enough one day for me to take a picture to complete this page on my website! |
